Air Canada is set to become the launch customer of a new interior design for Airbus A220 jets which feature supersized ‘XL’ overhead bins that have 15% more capacity than the bins currently fitted on the airline’s A220 fleet.
Airspace is the name coined by Airbus for a new interior design language that was initially used on its popular fleet of Airbus A320 series aircraft and then the widebody A330neo model.
Now, Airbus is bringing the same Airspace concept to the smaller A220 model with the first plane to be kitted out with the design set to be delivered to Air Canada as the launch customer in early 2026.
One of the most notable features of the Airspace cabin design from a passenger’s perspective has been the introduction of ‘XL’ bins that fit considerably more hand luggage than older overhead bin designs – helping to alleviate the frustration of gate checking hand luggage on busy flights.
The Airspace concept also comes with a new ceiling design and lighting that runs along the bottom of the XL bins.
“The A220 has already become a favorite among our customers, and we’re thrilled to be the launch customer for the next cabin evolution of this Canadian-designed and assembled aircraft,” commented John Moody, the airline’s managing director of onboard product.
“At Air Canada, we’re always looking for opportunities to evolve our products and make travel more comfortable and convenient. The introduction of larger overhead bins on future A220s means more space for your belongings, quicker boarding, and an even better experience on board,” Moody continued.
Air Canada has already taken delivery of 34 Airbus A220 aircraft, and while the airline didn’t outline any plans to retrofit these existing aircraft with the Airspace interior, passengers will eventually experience the new overhead bins of 31 aircraft that are yet to be delivered.
In 2023, Air Canada announced a major refurbishment program for its fleet of Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, including XL overhead bins, upgraded seating, Bluetooth audio, and new exterior cameras that can be viewed on the inflight entertainment system.
Air Canada also took the opportunity to install LED mood lighting throughout the cabin and upgrade onboard connectivity with a faster satellite-based Wi-Fi service. In addition, the aircraft had in-seat power installed, as well as live TV.
