Emirates is reportedly working on an update to the uniform that tens of thousands of cabin crew and ground staff wear, although the Dubai-based airline has no plans to scrap or make major changes to the iconic red hat and veil that turn heads around the world.
The airline has not updated its uniform in more than 15 years, having launched the last iteration in 2008 to mark the introduction of the flagship Airbus A380 superjumbo into the carrier’s fleet.
The updated uniform could well coincide with the first new aircraft model to join Emirates since then, the Airbus A350-900, which is set to take to the skies in commercial service in January 2025.
According to workwear and uniform expert Aileen Out, Emirates is already wear-testing the updated version of the cabin crew uniform, although from leaked images, expect evolution rather than revolution.
Emirates intends to update the silhouette of the female uniform with an a-line skirt, single-breasted jacket with a belt to cinch in the waist, and wrist-length sleeves with a pop of the airline’s iconic red colorway.
Male cabin crew will also be getting an updated uniform. Emirates plans to ditch the pin-stripe design of present, and add a waistcoat to the everyday look. A new pocket square and an updated tie will also be introduced.
Emirates intends to keep the existing color palette of the female uniform, although the shade of beige will be slightly darker than at present. The male uniform will also be the same color, and both uniforms will feature bronze-colored buttons.
One of the only changes that Emirates has made to the female uniform since 2008 was the introduction of new footwear styles earlier this year in a brighter shade of red. The updated uniform also appears to include the same footwear styles.
Emirates has long featured a beige uniform colorway, which is said to represent the region’s desert dunes.
The same desert theme was also widely used onboard Emirates’ aircraft, although in the last few years, the airline has moved away from that design theme and adopted a new sophisticated look that includes warm beige and cream tones, light blue, and bronze.
Last week, Emirates unveiled the interior of its new Airbus A350-900 for the first time, which features the updated design language throughout. Emirates is also embarking on a massive retrofit project to update existing Boeing 777s and Airbus A380s with the new design.
Like the recent update to the Emirates aircraft livery, the airline has opted to make small upgrades and refinements to its onboard product. It also looks like Emirates’ cabin crew uniform will be going through the same kind of upgrade.
