Eurowings, the low-cost, short-haul subsidiary of German flag carrier Lufthansa, has won a Four Star airline rating from the British aviation consulting firm Skytrax after judges praised its “efficient” cabin crew and two-class cabin configuration that pushed it ahead of Three Star rivals like Ryanair and Wizz Air.
Most known for its annual World Airline Awards, the consultancy firm also has a star rating system for nearly every global airline, although few ever achieve its lauded Five Star rating.
Lufthansa was, in fact, one such airline to achieve a Five Star rating back in 2017, although the airline was downgraded to a Four Star rating in 2022 because of cost-cutting and delays in introducing a new long-haul Business Class seat.
Eurowings started as a low-cost regional carrier for the Lufthansa Group before morphing into a pan-European value carrier. At one point, the carrier also took on long-haul flights, but in 2019, Lufthansa announced that Eurowings would solely concentrate on its short-haul business.
Unlike its budget rivals, Eurowings offers a two-class cabin configuration with a European-style Business Class (which simply means that the middle seat in a row of seats is blocked out, and a curtain separates the Business Class cabin from the rest of the aircraft).
The airline also offers inflight Wi-Fi, lounge access, priority check-in and access to Lufthansa’s Miles & More frequent flyer program.
“Eurowings stands for low-cost flying with more ease, but also for reliability and high-quality services,” commented Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof after the news that the airline had won a Four Star rating was revealed.
Bischof added: “The four-star rating from Skytrax reflects what we have been seeing for some time in numerous statistics and customer satisfaction surveys. Our crews on board and our teams on the ground work passionately to make the difference and win over more and more guests for Eurowings. They have more than earned this award.”
Only 14 low-cost carriers around the world currently hold a Four Star rating. Other European low-cost or ‘value’ airlines that already hold a Skytrax Four Star rating include Spanish carrier Vueling, easyJet and Aegean.
