British Airways has just launched a rare status match opportunity for US and Canadian-based passengers, giving eligible frequent flyers the ability to become a British Airways Executive Club Gold or Silver card member for at least months.
Given the fact that a BA status match is pretty much unheard of, the scope is pretty limited, although for those customers who do already hold status with one of the seven airlines that British Airways is willing to match, then this could be a pretty lucrative deal.
British Airways is only matching status with a few Star Alliance and Skyteam rivals, so this could give some frequent flyers a good opportunity to acquire Oneworld Emerald or Sapphire status, with the ability to extend the status by completing a challenge.
The status match is only open to frequent flyers who have an address in the United States or Canada and who already hold status with Air Canada, Air France, Delta Air Lines, Lufthansa, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Scandinavian Airlines, Virgin Atlantic or United Airlines.
In order to apply, you’ll need to join the BA Executive Club if you aren’t already a member and then upload proof of your current frequent flyer status on a special British Airways website by May 7, 2024. British Airways says it will take around five days to review your application, and if approved, you’ll receive your status match for an initial six-month period.
If you want to keep your Executive Club and Oneworld equivalent status for longer then you’ll need to complete a challenge:
- Complete two transatlantic flights within six months of receiving your status match, AND
- Both flights must be a BA marketed flight in Club World Business Class or First (or equivalent), AND
- Operated by British Airways or American Airlines, Iberia or Finnair, AND
- Originate from either Canada, Mexico or the United States
Once the return trip is over, BA will then extend your Executive Club status until the end of your next membership year.

That sucks! I have Air France silver. But I do have two trips coming up so I might make Gold by May 2.
They need to get rid of that awful new uniform and bring back the Julien MacDonald uniform!
