World of Hyatt is currently offering a 20% bonus on purchased points until December 4, 2023, effectively reducing the price of buying World of Hyatt points from 2.4 cents per point to just 2 cents per point.

Purchasing points in addition to earning points on cash stays and credit card spending can be a good way to unlock luxury award travel, especially if you are already close to a redemption threshold. Of course, the argument for buying points is definitely stronger when a bonus or discount promotion like this one is on offer.

In this article…

    What’s the deal?

From October 30 to December 4, 2023, you can purchase World of Hyatt points with a bonus of 20% when you buy at least 3,000 points.

You can buy World of Hyatt points in increments of 1,000 up to a maximum of 55,000 points in one transaction. Incidentally, this is also the maximum number of World of Hyatt points you are allowed to buy in a calendar year.

If you were to max out this deal, you would earn an additional 11,000 points on top of the maximum 55,000 points you can buy for a purchase price of $1,320.

World of Hyatt points are particularly attractive not only because of Hyatt’s range of decent properties but also because the program offers a fixed award chart, which makes it easy to calculate how many points you’ll need for a specific redemption.

    Cost per point

World of Hyatt normally sells points for 2.4 cents each.

With the 20% bonus applied, the cost per point drops to just 2 cents per point. This is just marginally more than what I value World of Hyatt points to be worth at face value.

Maximum number of points you’re allowed to buy

World of Hyatt members are allowed to purchase a maximum of 55,000 points per calendar year. This doesn’t include bonus amounts, do you could max out the promotion and earn additional bonus points on top of that limit.

How much is a World of Hyatt point worth?

    1.5

Each World of Hyatt point is worth approximately 1.5 cents

In my assessment, World of Hyatt points are worth around 1.5 cents per point. This is a little less than what you can purchase World of Hyatt points for with the 20% bonus applied.

Is it worth speculatively buying points?

Whether or not it’s worth speculatively buying points very much depends on how you plan to use them, and there are arguments for and against stocking up on points.

I generally advise only to buy points in order to boost your points balance to achieve a specific redemption, but this latest deal is an excellent opportunity to acquire points for a very reasonable price, which could, in turn, unlock some pretty compelling award night opportunities.

The case for speculatively buying points is definitely stronger when there’s an attractive discount promotion such as this one, although you’ll want to be certain you are getting value for money when you book an award night.

How many points do I need for an award night?

World of Hyatt offers an easy-to-understand award chart, allowing you to calculate how many points you need for various hotel brands and categories. The redemption options include a wide range of luxurious properties under the Hyatt portfolio.

The main World of Hyatt award chart breaks down hotel brands into categories, with category 1 being the cheapest and featuring brands like Hyatt Place and Hyatt House, whereas luxury speciality hotels like the Carmel Valley Ranch in California or The Norman, Tel Aviv feature in the top tier category 8 listing.

Redemptions start at just 3,500 points per night for a standard room, off-peak at a Category 1 property.

There are no blackout dates, and you can even use points at all-inclusive resorts, although these are subject to a separate, more expensive award chart.

What is the 5-Brand Explorer Free Night Award?

Since 2017, World of Hyatt has offered its ‘5-Brand Award’ (also called the ‘Brand Explorer award), giving members the opportunity to enjoy a free award night for every five unique Hyatt brands they stay at.

    Here’s how it works:

    • Stay at five different Hyatt brands
    • Eligible stays can be paid through cash or points, or via an award night
    • For every five unique Hyatt brands you stay at, you earn one Brand Explorer award night
    • The award night can be used for standard rooms at Category 1-4 hotels only
    • You must use the award night within one year of it being issued

There are currently 26 unique Hyatt brands which could count towards a Brand Explorer meaning that you have the potential to earn up to five award nights over the lifetime of your membership.

The complete list of participating brands is as follows: Park Hyatt, Miraval, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency, Hyatt, Andaz, Hyatt Centric, The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, Thompson Hotels, Alila (some locations only), JdV by Hyatt, Dream (some locations only), Destination by Hyatt (both participating Destination by Hyatt Hotels and participating Destination by Hyatt Residences locations), Caption by Hyatt, Hyatt Place, Hyatt House, Hyatt Zilara, Hyatt Ziva, Hyatt Vivid, Impression by Secrets, Secrets (only once the location has begun participating), Dreams (only once the location has begun participating), Breathless, Zoëtry (only once the location has begun participating), Alua (only once the applicable location has begun participating), Sunscape, or Hyatt Vacation Club

Do World of Hyatt points expire?

Unfortunately, yes. If you’ve had no account activity for 24 months, then you effectively forfeit all the points in your account, and there’s no way to reinstate them once they’re gone.

Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to keep your account active, including:

    • Earning points through eligible hotel stays
    • Redeeming points for award nights, etc
    • Converting points to a World of Hyatt partner

Purchasing points will also keep your account active.

How does this offer compare to previous promotions?

    September 1 – October 10, 2023Buy points with a 25% discount
    June – August 2023Buy points with a 25% bonus
    April 14 – June 2, 2023Buy points with a 25% discount

Unfortunately, the bonus for this current promotion is slightly below what has been offered in other recent offers. However, it’s worth noting that the minimum number of points required to activate the bonus has also been set lower, making it easier to participate in this promotion.

    Summary

World of Hyatt is currently offering a bonus of 20% on purchased points, effectively reducing the normal cost of 2.4 cents per points to just 2 cents per point.
