A man attempted to run away from police who had stopped him for routine questioning but ended up fleeing onto the tarmac of a major international airport, prompting a serious security alert.
The as-yet-unnamed 18-year-old had allegedly given false information to local police before running from them at Perth Airport in Western Australia.
The suspect first used an emergency exit door to get into a restricted passenger zone of the airport before pushing past the oncoming flow of passengers and then accessing another emergency exit to get onto the tarmac.
Australian Federal Police were, however, able to quickly locate and apprehend the man, who was taken into custody and charged with a series of offences, including trespassing in a secure area of the airport.
Despite the man’s quick arrest, airport operations were severely impacted as police carried out a “full security sweep” of the breached areas.
The man has been released on bail with conditions not to approach Perth Airport and will appear in court on October 3, where he will also face charges of giving false personal details and using false identification documents.
