Iberia Plus is currently running a flash sale on Avios with a 50% bonus on purchased Avios points until August 22. You can buy Avios through Iberia Plus starting from just 2,000 Avios points and transfer them to other loyalty programs that share the Avios currency, including British Airways Executive Club, Aer Lingus AerClub and Qatar Airways Privilege Club.
Speculatively buying Avios points can be an attractive proposition to unlock luxury award travel, especially if you are already close to a redemption threshold. And the case for buying points is definitely stronger when a bonus or discount promotion like this one is running.
What’s the deal?
From August 17, 2023, to August 22, 2023, you can purchase Avios through the Iberia Plus program with a 50% bonus.
- The minimum purchase amount is 2,000 Avios points.
- The maximum number of Avios you can purchase in a calendar year is 200,000.
To be eligible to buy Avios, you’ll need to have collected Avios through the Iberia Plus program within the last three years. If you haven’t accrued any Avios through Iberia Plus in that timeframe, then you can still purchase Avios as long as you have at least one Avios in your Iberia Plus account.
If necessary, you can transfer Avios from another program that uses Avios as its reward currency – such as British Airways Executive Club or Aer Lingus AerClub.
What are the Pros and Cons?
- Avios is the rewards currency of British Airways, Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus, Vueling and, of course, Iberia.
- Points can be transferred between airlines at a 1:1 ratio.
- Iberia offers good value transatlantic off-peak Business Class redemptions.
- Beware of peak periods when redeeming Avios with Iberia Plus doesn’t present great value.
- You must have had your Iberia Plus account for at least 90 days before you can transfer Avios to another program.
- The Iberia website is prone to technical problems and customer service can be hard to contact.
How much is an Avios point worth?
1.3
Each Avios point is worth approximately 1.3 cents
On average, each Avios point is worth approximately 1.3 cents.
Is it worth speculatively buying Avios?
My general advice is only to buy Avios if you are looking to boost your points balance to achieve a specific redemption. That being said, this latest deal is an excellent opportunity to acquire points for a very reasonable price which could, in turn, unlock some pretty compelling award opportunities.
The case for speculatively buying Avios is definitely stronger when there’s an attractive bonus promotion such as this one, although you’ll want to be certain you are getting value for money when you book an award flight.
How many miles do I need for an award flight?
Although Avios is a shared rewards currency that retains the same base value, Iberia, British Airways, Aer Lingus, Vueling and Qatar Airways all have different award charts, and each has its own specific advantages for certain redemptions.
Iberia operates a distance-based awards chart, which makes it fairly easy to work out how many Avios you need for a specific redemption.
In particular, Iberia Plus is a good way to bag great value transatlantic off-peak Business Class redemptions. For example, you can score a one-way redemption from Chicago O’Hare, New York JFK or Boston to Iberia’s hub in Madrid for just 34,000 Avios points.
Avios can also be redeemed through Iberia’s Oneworld alliance partners, including American Airlines. Using Iberia Plus for an American Airlines redemption can present some good value options due to AA’s use of dynamic award pricing.
Fuel surcharges with Iberia also aren’t nearly as eye-wateringly bad as with British Airways, although there might be many occasions where it’s better value to transfer Avios from Iberia Plus to another loyalty program like British Airways Executive Club.
Do Avios points expire?
Avios points can expire if you haven’t had any activity within your Iberia Plus account for 36 months (three years).
To stop your Avios from expiring, you need to collect, spend, buy or share at least one Avios every 36 months.
The risk of Avios expiring is specific to each loyalty club that runs on Avios, so if you collect or redeem Avios through British Airways Executive Club, you would still lose any Avios in your Iberia Plus account if you didn’t have any Iberia Plus account activity for 36 months.
Iberia Plus will alert you two months before expiry, but once the Avios are gone, there is no way of recovering them.
What other ways are there to earn Avios?
Coming soon.
How does this offer compare to previous promotions?
We generally see Iberia Plus offer a bonus on purchased Avios points every couple of months. The latest offer is in keeping with the usual 50% bonus offered by Iberia Plus when Avios are put on sale.
