Passengers at Frankfurt Airport faced severe delays, and dozens of flights were cancelled on Wednesday evening after severe thunderstorms across Germany left planes sitting in lakes of water.
Parts of the airfield and terminal buildings were flooded as rainwater deluged the airport when parts of Germany were subjected to wild summer storms that wreaked chaos across Frankfurt.
At least 70 flights were cancelled at Frankfurt Airport on Wednesday after operations were brought to a standstill by the thunderstorms. A video shared online by one worker at the airport showed several Lufthansa planes sitting in lakes of water, unable to move due to the floods.
Ground operations were stopped for at least two hours, and several inbound flights had to divert to alternative airports because Frankfurt couldn’t cope with any arrivals during the worst of the storm.
A spokesperson for Frankfurt Airport said delays were expected to affect operations throughout Thursday due to yesterday’s severe weather.
