British Airways is losing yet another senior manager with its chief technical officer, Jason Mahoney set to leave the airline by the airline of the year. Mahoney was the carrier’s chief operating officer for just two years, but in April 2022 he had some responsibilities stripped from him and was sidelined into a newly created role.
Over the course of the year, British Airways has seen a slew of senior managers ‘voluntarily’ leave the business including its Chief Customer Officer who is responsible for what passengers experience on the ground and in the air.
The airline has also brought in new appointments for its Director of Business Recovery and Chief People Officer and created a new role of Director of Industrial Relations as BA seeks to rebuild broken relations with staff.
British Airways has poached René de Groot as its new Chief Operating Officer from European rival KLM where he had worked for 32 years. De Groot is set to get to work at BA’s Waterside headquarters next month and will have his work cut out for him.
The airline has experienced a summer of travel chaos after slashing thousands of jobs during the pandemic and then failing to hire back staff quick enough as travel restrictions were lifted.
British Airways has been able to largely stabilise its operation by slashing its planned summer schedule, but problems persist, and de Groot will have to hit the ground running to continue the turnaround for the embattled airline.
Mahoney started his career at British Airways as an engineering apprentice in 1989 and after stints at British Midland and the TUI Group, he returned to BA as Director of Engineering in 2016.
