Swiss International Air Lines has found itself with a surplus of Economy Class seats and rather than keeping them as spares, the airline has decided to auction off the seats for charity.
The airline has recently installed its first-ever Premium Economy cabin and has removed rows of standard Economy Class seats to make room for the new product which are now available on an online auction site.
Over the next four weeks, SWISS will sell its stock of three-seat sets of Economy Class seats. The seats come complete with safety cards, decommissioned life vests and a personalized plaque.
The IFE television screens have been removed but the tray tables are still fitted.
The current bid for the first set of three seats has already reached 754 CHF (US $806) and the successful bidder will have to collect the seats in person from the SWISS facility in Kloten.
All proceeds from the auction will be donated to the Pigna Foundation offers people with disabilities a place to live and work along with care and support that are tailored to their needs.
SWISS has partnered with the Pigna foundation for years and the airline has its inflight headphones reprocessed by the people at Pigna.
