An airport employee at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California was injured after a stray bullet from a Sheriff Sergeant’s gun penetrated a wall and hit her in the arm. The shooting occurred after the officer somehow managed to accidentally discharge his service weapon in an administrative office away from the public and passengers. An investigation has been launched by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
The incident, which took place at 7:02 am on Wednesday morning, resulted in the airport employee who is in her 50’s being transported to the hospital. Her injuries are not life-threatening.
In a statement, the Sheriff’s department said “an unintentional weapon discharge by an Orange County Sheriff’s Sergeant occurred in the John Wayne Airport Terminal Administrative Office. The round penetrated a wall and hit a John Wayne Airport employee in the arm.”
“The incident did not affect airport operations and the Terminal Administrative Office is not an area regularly accessed by the public. The Terminal Administrative Office is closed until the investigation is complete,” the statement continued.
Both the district attorney and Sheriff’s department are conducting separate inquiries into how the unintentional discharge happened.
