It may not quite be the 1st April – or April Fool’s Day – but that hasn’t stopped Emirates getting in on the fun a little bit early. The Dubai-based airline has posted a couple of photos to its social media accounts in the last couple of hours announcing a new fleet of chauffeur-less drones that will whisk passengers between any location in Dubai to the carrier’s hub at DXB.
The airline says each drone will feature two fully-enclosed First Class private suites and will be offered to all of its Skywards Platinum members. Except, we don’t think these drones are going to take to the sky anytime soon – although it’s probably the most realistic April Fool’s Day prank the airline has pulled in the last few years.
Celebrating April Fool’s Day has become a bit of tradition for the airline and last year Emirates launched some far-out designs of new aircraft that included swimming pools
In December, Emirates also showed its cheekier side by reposting a picture of a blinged-up version of a Boeing 777 which had been studded with hundreds of thousands of swarovski crystals – with the help of Photoshop of course.
All jokes aside, there might be some truth in Emirates trialling autonomous taxi drones at some point in the future. The future-forward Dubai announced plans to trial a similar drone with the hope that 25% of mass transit journeys would be made by drones within the next 10 years.
